The Travelling Gavel

A cherished tradition encouraging fellowship and visiting between lodges across the Province of Durham.

The Travelling Gavel is a cherished tradition within the Province of Durham, originally created by Castle Lodge No. 6713 in 2012 to encourage friendly visits and inter-lodge fellowship. After a number of years out of circulation, it was formally reclaimed by the Province and, by direction of the Provincial Grand Master, reinstated at the Annual Meeting held on Saturday 28th June 2025.

The Gavel is once again journeying around the Province, passed from lodge to lodge in the spirit of camaraderie, with the aim of fostering greater visiting and connection between brethren.

At the Annual Meeting on 28th June 2025, the newly installed Provincial Grand Master, John Watts, used the Travelling Gavel as the official Gavel for the meeting. Later, at the Festive Board, he presented it to Rowland Burdon Lodge No. 3960 - the Lodge with the highest number of members dining - marking the beginning of this new chapter in the Gavel's story.

Below you will find the full rules governing the custody and transfer of the Gavel, along with a log of its travels to date. Its current whereabouts and status are maintained here on the Provincial website.

Rules of the Travelling Gavel
  1. The intention of the Travelling Gavel is to encourage visits between Lodges in the Province of Durham.
  2. The Travelling Gavel is confined to Lodges in the Province of Durham and cannot be rescued by any Lodge from another Province. A rescuing Lodge is a Lodge that visits the Lodge in which the Travelling Gavel resides, for the purpose of "Rescuing" (claiming) it.
  3. The Travelling Gavel must be surrendered, along with its Passport, to the successful rescuing Lodge which must have at least four of its members present. This can only be done at the Festive Board. It is requested that a potential rescuing Lodge email the Lodge Secretary with dining bookings in good time to confirm numbers and arrangements.
  4. If two or more Rescuing Lodges demand its surrender, it must be surrendered to the Rescuing Lodge with the highest number of members present. In the event of an equal number the WM of the surrendering Lodge shall decide.
  5. The Rescuing Lodge and the surrendering Lodge must inform the 9833 Club, Gavel@Durhamfreemasons.org, within 7 days so that the whereabouts of the Travelling Gavel can be ascertained. The Rescuing Lodge must enter their Lodge name and number along with the date in the Travelling Gavel Passport.
  6. The Travelling Gavel remains the property of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham, and it may be recalled at any time. This clause overrides clauses 3, 4 and 5.
  7. Rescuing Lodges must agree to abide by these rules.
