Monday, 22nd September, marked not only the first full visit for the newly invested acting Provincial Officers, but also the first for the Provincial Grand Master, John Watts, as he led a deputation to Lodge of Unity No. 6003 in Stockton. Whilst waiting to be admitted, he warmly thanked everyone for turning up and being part of his team.
As anyone who has witnessed a deputation will know, part of the formality involves offering salutations to those present. On this occasion, however, proceedings were briefly interrupted when John, occupying the Master’s Chair, took the opportunity to present Michael Shaw, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, with his patent of office. Michael then received his own salutation, along with Tom Gittins, who was also in attendance.
With the Master, Jason Gardener, restored to his seat, the Lodge then witnessed Sean Lee being passed to the degree of a Fellow Craft in a ceremony delivered to a very high standard. Congratulations were duly offered to all those who took part, with special mention to Sean on taking his second of four steps in Freemasonry.
During the Provincial rising, Jason presented John with a donation of £100 towards the TLC Durham charity. This was gratefully received and will be added to the £30,000 recently raised by the TLC Riders, whose feat culminated in the delivery of the four millionth TLC teddy to Zak at University Hospital of North Tees.
After the close of the meeting, attention turned to the festive board, which featured plentiful and well-served food, enjoyed in an atmosphere of excellent fellowship.
In response to the toast to the Provincial Grand Master, John reminded those present of one of his favourite pieces of ritual, found in the Address to the Wardens. Paraphrasing, he reflected: “What you see praiseworthy in others, imitate; what you see as defective, in yourselves amend.” He encouraged the brethren to strive to be the best versions of themselves.
He also outlined several new initiatives within the Province. From 1st September, every brother will receive a card on his birthday, and anniversary certificates will now be issued from the 10-year milestone, with subsequent presentations at 25, 40, 50 and 60 year milestones. These, he noted, should serve as tools to start conversations with those who are curious about Freemasonry and may be considering joining.
John went on to highlight the importance of involvement, encouraging members to take part in the many activities and social aspects of Provincial life, such as Parkrun, angling, shooting, and other events. Speaking of Parkrun, he announced that a new location will soon open in East Durham, fully funded by Durham Freemasons. Its inaugural event is sure to be well supported, and everyone is encouraged to attend.
The Dragon’s Den initiative was also mentioned. All current dates are now fully booked, but further events are planned, each requiring 30 to 40 volunteers to act as Dragons, helping support young people with their challenges and projects. This was echoed by the Provincial Senior Warden, Kenneth Kent, who has participated in previous events and spoke of how rewarding it is to witness the impact of the donations being well spent.
With November approaching, members were reminded of the new provincial poppy tie, priced at £15, of which £10 will be donated to military charities identified by the Armed Forces Committee. It is requested that members wear the tie to every meeting in November. Heads of other Orders have agreed that it may also be worn across all Companion Orders. Brethren are further encouraged to wear the tie on Remembrance Day parades, too, 22 of which will be actively supported and attended by the Province this year.
In closing, John thanked the Lodge for a fantastic evening, highlighted by a festive board atmospherically lit by candlelight, and once again congratulated Sean on his advancement to the Second Degree.
The evening was rounded off by the Master, Jason, who drew the raffle featuring a wide selection of prizes.
A memorable night was enjoyed by all, and anticipation is already building for the next Provincial outing.
