Thursday 12th March 2026 marked a very special occasion at Marquess of Ripon Lodge No. 1379, as WBro Ian Kirkbride, PPJGW, celebrated fifty years of dedicated service to Freemasonry.
A well-known and highly respected Freemason, Ian occupied the Chair of the Lodge for the evening and was presented with his 50 Year Certificate by the Past Provincial Grand Master, RtWBro Eric Heaviside.
Initiated into Longscar Lodge No. 6203 in Hartlepool in March 1976, Ian’s Masonic journey has spanned both geography and generations. Following a period in the South of England, where he continued his Masonic career, he returned to the North East and joined Marquess of Ripon Lodge in 2004. His commitment and leadership were soon recognised, culminating in his installation as Worshipful Master in 2005.
Ian’s contribution to Freemasonry extends well beyond his Lodge. He is a Founder Member and Past Master of Durham Provincial Grand Stewards Lodge, a Past First Principal of Baliol Chapter in Barnard Castle, and has served with distinction as Secretary of Nevill Lodge of Installed Masters for many years. His service has been characterised by dedication, reliability, and a genuine passion for the Craft.
During the evening, Ian reflected on his Masonic journey, sharing a number of amusing recollections. A lifelong Newcastle United supporter, he skilfully avoided mentioning the “S” word on several occasions, much to the good-natured displeasure of RtWBro Heaviside, a devoted Sunderland supporter.
Following the presentation, around fifty Brethren retired to enjoy the customary Darlington Festive Board, where Ian was presented with a keepsake by the Lodge in recognition of his remarkable milestone.
Ian’s fifty years of service stand as a testament to his enduring commitment, friendship, and the true values of Freemasonry.
