Celebrating 100 Years of Caradoc Lodge No. 4749

Castle Eden, October 2025 - The Centenary of Caradoc Lodge No. 4749 was marked with a memorable evening of ceremony, history, and fellowship, attended by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, W. Bro. Andrew Foster, accompanied by a deputation of Provincial Officers.

The evening began with a fascinating presentation by the Lodge’s Junior Warden, Bro. Jim Sutherland, who delivered an updated history of the Lodge - a century’s worth of dedication, service, and Masonic friendship. His talk was warmly received by all present, and each attendee was presented with a beautifully produced centenary booklet to commemorate the occasion.

Among the many points of interest shared was the story of the Lodge’s gavels, crafted from wood reclaimed from the historic Caradoc coal seam - a poignant link to the Lodge’s roots. Two new collection trays were also unveiled, hand-made by Bro. Alan Ruddell from teak originally “acquired” by Jim’s father, Bro. Ian Sutherland, during his time as a naval engineer serving in the Persian Gulf.

Following the dedication of the Centenary Warrant, the Deputy Provincial Grand Master had the pleasure of presenting the Centenary Jewels to the members present - a moment of pride and reflection for all in attendance.

At the festive board, in response to the Provincial Toast, Andrew conveyed the best wishes of the Provincial Grand Master, who was away attending a course for Provincial Grand Masters’. With humour and warmth, Andrew noted that although he missed his company, he had “thoroughly enjoyed leading the deputation on the evening” and “wouldn’t mind if he was away again!”

He went on to thank the Lodge for what had been a tremendous evening - praising the historical presentation by Bro. Jim Sutherland, the thoughtful keepsakes (including the booklet, beermat, and lapel pin), and the generous cheque presented to him in Lodge.

One of the evening’s most touching moments came when Andrew unveiled the Centenary Plaque, noting that his own name was inscribed upon it. He described it as both “a great surprise and a great honour,” especially as it now sits alongside the 75th Anniversary Plaque unveiled by the late R.W. Bro. Derek Richmond, a man and Mason whom Andrew deeply admired.

The evening could not pass without mention of W. Bro. Bill Chrystal who was booked in to attend the meeting but had recently passed to the Grand Lodge Above. At the festive board, a single candle burned in Bill's memory, marking his enduring presence and the respect held for him by all who knew him.

The celebration concluded with a heartfelt toast given by the Provincial Grand Senior Warden, Kenneth Kent - a fitting close to a century of Masonic fellowship, dedication, and community spirit.

Here’s to the next 100 years of Caradoc Lodge No. 4749!
