Bloodrun Emergency Voluntary Service has unveiled a brand-new Hyundai Kona Hybrid response car, funded by the Freemasons’ Mark Benevolent Fund, to help save lives across the North East.
The official handover took place at the Hampton Hotel by Hylton in Stockton, where the keys were presented by David Hanson (Head of Mark Masons in Durham) and Bob Clancey (Head of Mark Masons in North & East Yorkshire). The vehicle was supplied by SG Petch Ltd of Darlington, who have supported the charity for more than a decade.
Lifesaving impact within hours
Within hours of the handover, the car was dispatched on a critical mission - transporting urgent blood samples from James Cook Hospital to King’s College London for a patient with a rare, life-threatening condition.
Leaving Stockton at 5pm, volunteers arrived in London by 10pm. Specialist tests were completed that night, and by 2am, lifesaving treatment was under way - made possible by Bloodrun’s swift response.
More than motorcycles
While Bloodrun is best known for its fleet of motorcycles, cars are essential for larger consignments, temperature-sensitive deliveries, and severe weather when bikes cannot be deployed safely.
“It’s about saving lives”
Speaking at the handover, David Hanson said:
“This grant isn’t just about funding - it’s about saving lives. The true heroes are the volunteers who step up, time and again, without hesitation.”
About Bloodrun
Bloodrun’s 65 volunteers operate 24/7, always answering urgent calls with a simple “yes.” A similar vehicle was presented to Northumbria Blood Bikes at The Fed during the Durham Mark AGM in June, and together with Bloodrun they provide cover across the Durham area. Several Durham Freemasons also serve as volunteer riders and drivers, including Provincial Grand Master John Watts and Rev Paul Paterson, Past Deputy Grand Superintendent.
