More than 600 Brethren gathered at The Fed in Gateshead on Saturday 27th June for the Provincial Grand Lodge of Durham Annual Meeting, with a capacity dining attendance of 470 making it one of the largest gatherings of Durham Freemasons in recent years.
The meeting marked the culmination of an eventful first year for John Watts, who reflected on twelve months of charity, community engagement, innovation, membership growth and the many stories that have demonstrated the positive impact Durham Freemasons continue to make across the region.
Addressing the meeting, John thanked the Brethren and their families for their support throughout the year and celebrated what had been achieved together.
"It has been a year of amazing stories and great fun."
He reflected on the countless acts of charity, community service, recruitment and friendship that have characterised the Province over the last twelve months, adding that the success of Durham Freemasons has come through members embracing the values of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service while remembering that "Every Brother Matters."
The meeting was honoured by the presence of Assistant Grand Master and Past Provincial Grand Master of Durham, John Thompson, together with distinguished guests from Women's Freemasonry: Grand Registrar of the Order of Women Freemasons, June Clark, and Assistant Grand Master of the Order of Women Freemasons, Jean Briggs. The Province was also privileged to welcome Dame Susan Snowdon DCVO, recently retired as Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham, Dame Susan Snowdon, whose attendance made the occasion particularly special following her retirement after many years of distinguished public service.
Introducing Dame Susan, John Watts explained that when he had asked how Durham Freemasons could mark her retirement, her response was both humble and characteristic.
"The opportunity to address your members will be the best gift you could give me, and if you want to do something financially, a grant to a charity."
Dame Susan told the meeting how impressed she had always been by the visible difference Durham Freemasons make within communities across the Province through their charitable giving, volunteering and support for local people. She said she was delighted to have been invited to address the Brethren on such a special occasion.
In recognition of her exceptional service to County Durham, Durham Freemasons Charity presented a grant of £2,500 towards the Durham City Remembrance Parade—five times its usual annual contribution.
The Province also revived a historic tradition by presenting Dame Susan with a specially commissioned Illuminated Address. The citation was read by John Henry, recognising her outstanding contribution to civic life throughout County Durham.
The meeting also celebrated the dedication of Duncan Maw, who received special recognition for his exceptional commitment to the health and wellbeing of members and for his leadership of initiatives that continue to support Brethren and their families across the Province.
John concluded by thanking the Provincial Grand Stewards, the Administrative Team, Ceremonial Officers and the Communications Team for their dedication in making the Annual Meeting such a success.
The day concluded with the investment of Provincial Officers and a renewed commitment to continue building stronger communities across Durham through Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Service.
