Provincial Grand Master for Durham, John Watts, marked his return from a week of engagements in London at the United Grand Lodge of England with a special visit to Benfeldsyde Lodge No. 7807 on Saturday evening. Accompanied by his Director of Ceremonies, David Atkinson, the occasion was a significant one: the celebration of Joseph William “Bill” Forster’s remarkable 65-year milestone in Freemasonry—his “Blue Sapphire” anniversary.
Bill’s connection to Freemasonry stretches back even further than his official initiation in 1961. From the age of just 10, he was a familiar presence at Consett Masonic Hall, assisting his grandfather and father—both Tylers of Constance Lodge No. 2135—in preparing the Lodge room for meetings. Continuing the family tradition, Bill became the first in his family to progress through the Lodge offices, ultimately serving as Master in April 1973.
That same period marked the beginning of a lasting friendship with Eric Heaviside, a past Provincial Grand Master, who became Master of Benfeldsyde Lodge just three weeks before Bill’s own installation. Decades later, the connection remains strong. Now serving once again as Master of Benfeldsyde Lodge, Eric delivered a heartfelt toast in Bill’s honour during the evening’s festive board.
The meeting itself featured a relaxed “fireside chat” between John Watts and Bill, offering members an engaging glimpse into Bill’s life and experiences. Among the highlights were stories from his career as a printer for the Consett Guardian, as well as his role in producing Lodge summonses during the era before digital printing transformed the process.
The evening also held special significance for Provincial Mentor Gaurav Jamnadass, as Benfeldsyde Lodge is his mother lodge. It was his first meeting there since receiving Grand Rank in London earlier in the week. He was warmly congratulated once again by John Watts, this time in front of the Past Masters’ board, where Gaurav is recorded as Master for three consecutive years: 2019, 2020, and 2021.
In response to his toast, John shared updates on the “Building Together” initiative discussed in London. He spoke about the ongoing evolution of Freemasonry, highlighting its commitment to adapting in a modern world while continuing to provide opportunities for members to grow personally and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
The evening stood as a fitting tribute to dedication, friendship, and the enduring values of Freemasonry.
