From his early days as a paperboy in the 1960s to a lifetime of service in Freemasonry, WBro Jeff Rowland’s journey is one of dedication, resilience and friendship. That journey was celebrated at Corinthian Lodge No. 5808 as he received his 50 Year Certificate, recognising five decades of commitment to the Craft.
The certificate was presented by WBro Michael Shaw, Assistant Head of Durham Freemasons, who spent time with Jeff reflecting on a remarkable life journey - at home, in his career, and throughout five decades in Freemasonry.
Jeff was initiated into Corinthian Lodge on 23 March 1976, beginning a lifelong commitment to the Craft. Reflecting on that evening, he recalled feeling apprehensive before entering the Lodge, reassured only slightly by the Tyler, Don Brown, who reminded him that everyone present had taken the same journey. Once inside, a small mishap with a heeled shoe left him limping - something, he joked, he is still doing 50 years later.
Jeff’s working life began as a paperboy before starting his career in 1963 as an apprentice bricklayer with British Rail Engineering Ltd at Shildon. His early years saw him seconded to major refurbishment works, gaining valuable experience. Over the years, his career developed into roles involving inspection and engineering across the country, from York and Doncaster to Glasgow and London. Following redundancy in 1989, he continued in a similar role with Gower Associates before joining local government, where he served for over 20 years as a Building Inspector with Cleveland County Council and later Stockton Borough Council.
Despite the demands of his career - and the travel it involved - Jeff remained deeply committed to Freemasonry. He structured his work to ensure he could attend Lodge meetings, often arranging his schedule to be home in time for key evenings. His progression through the Lodge was steady, taking 18 years to reach the Chair, followed by many years in key roles including Director of Ceremonies and Assistant Director of Ceremonies. Between Lodge and Chapter, Jeff has dedicated more than 35 years to ceremonial roles, supporting and guiding others.
A committed member beyond the Craft, Jeff joined the Chapter in 1984 and the Mark in 1983, and has contributed widely across Masonic life, including compiling the Lodge’s 75th anniversary history.
Outside Freemasonry, Jeff married his wife Jennifer in 1972, and he credits her continued support as vital to his journey. Together they have a son, Scott, and five grandchildren. His interests include swimming, walking, gardening and travel, with memorable trips including visits to Silverstone and Abu Dhabi for Formula One events.
Members of Corinthian Lodge enjoyed an evening of humour and reflection as Jeff shared stories from across the years, before joining together to congratulate him on reaching this exceptional milestone.
