Hackworth ParkRun Takeover

On Saturday, Freemasons and their families from the Province of Durham took over the volunteer positions at Shildon’s Hackworth ParkRun allowing the regular volunteers to have a well earned day off.

The Run Director, Marshals, TimeKeepers and Barcode Scanning roles were all taken on by the Freemasons ParkRun team which has been “up and running” for around 12 months.

The head of Durham Freemasons, the Provincial Grand Master John Thompson and his wife Andrea filled the tailwalking roles with John completing his 50th ParkRun.  He even got to wear a foxes tail to mark the occasion!!

The venture is believed to be the first time local Freemasons have successfully taken all of the volunteer positions at a ParkRun, something that the Durham ParkRun team are hoping to replicate at other locations across the North East.  Sixty Nine people took part in the 439th running of the Shildon event in Hackworth Park, a great day was had by all, which concluded with the traditional Coffee and copious amounts of cake in the Hub in the Park.

Who are we?

Corinthian Lodge, No. 5808 is a Lodge that has been in existence for 83 years, consecrated in November 1939. We are an average sized Lodge, with 36 members, quality rather than quantity, with an age range from 28 years to 91 years. We are a Lodge that enjoys masonry and always try perform quality ceremonies. We have a regular following of visitors from other local Lodges and our members in turn support those Lodges.

What we do

We enjoy our Masonry.  Whilst we encourage members to progress through the various Officer posts and take an active part in ceremonies there is absolutely no pressure to do so. We always try to maintain the traditions of Masonry but we move with the times to enhance membership quality and try to give everyone feeling of belonging.

Feed Bellies not Bins | Durham Freemasons

The Provincial Grand Master, John Thompson, led a full Team visit to Corinthian Lodge in Shildon on Tuesday 23 rd May. The Lodge room was full, with over 75 brethren in attendance to witness Gavin North receiving his 2 nd Degree in an excellent ceremony performed by the officers of the Lodge.

The 3-course meal served (photos included) at the festive board was enjoyed by all present, and only afterwards were they informed that the food they ate was 100% rescued by and donated by “Shildon Alive”, who had in the recent past received a donation from Durham Benevolence, of £1,000.00 match funded by the MCF.

The Project Manager of Shildon Alive, Paula Nelson, who had attended a benevolence meeting last year, and spoke passionately on the subject of “Feed bellies, not bins” was present at the festive board accompanied by Tracy Chapell, the Food Co-Ordinator. Both speakers enlightened everyone as to the millions of pounds worth of food, which would end up in landfills, although perfectly edible, which was rescued by the likes of Shildon Alive, who used the food to benefit the local community where it was needed.

The brethren present were asked to make a donation, suggested at £10 per head, in lieu of payment for the meal provided. A super raffle was also held and when both totals were added to the collection tray from the Lodge room, a magnificent sum of £1440.00 was donated to Durham Benevolence, to then be presented to Shildon Alive, gratefully accepted by Chairman John Watts. John in his reply thanked everyone for their generosity, and by resounding acclaim, all those present hoped Durham Benevolence would increase the £1,440.00 to £2,000.00 as an additional grant.

In his concluding remarks, John gave huge praise to Stan Hunter. the Benevolence Representative of Corinthian Lodge, for all of his efforts in arranging the meeting to take place.

Long Live the King | Durham Freemasons

Aclet Lodge may well have been one of the first masonic lodges to toast the newly crowned King.  The lodge held its meeting on Bank Holiday, Monday the 8th May and the Master, Robert Dickenson opened the lodge in the usual manner.  After the opening business was concluded, George Siddle, of Vane Lodge rose to his feet trumpet in hand and played a wonderful fanfare, followed by the National Anthem.  The lodge Master Robert then proclaimed our King, King Charles III.  This resulted in the brethren responding with great gusto “Long live the King” with a three-cheer salutation following.

The lodge was then closed in due form and the attending brethren moved downstairs for a whisky toast and again the national anthem was sung.  Toasts followed to the King and the Grand Master. The business was concluded by 19:30 hours with the brethren returning home to their families to conclude the Bank Holiday.

This was certainly a novel idea and the lodge members and visitors alike approved of this gesture on this most auspicious occasion, a timely and significant show of recognition to our new Monarch.
