On Friday 7th July the Assistant ProvGM W Bro Clinton Leeks entertained 50 Ferryhill Installed Masters at their annual dinner with stories of his experience in Hong Kong and his time working for Christopher Francis Patten, Baron Patten of Barnes, KG, CH, PC is a British politician who was the 28th and last Governor of Hong Kong from 1992 to 1997, and the British Government.

Hammurabi L9606

Who are we?

Hammurabi Lodge No9606 was formed in 1996 and was originally situated at Old Elvet,
Durham City, but moved to Ferryhill in February 2018. The lodge is named after King
Hammurabi who ruled the Babylonian Empire from 1792 – 1750 BCE. One reason that
Hammurabi created his code of laws was because he was concerned with keeping order in his
kingdom. The word Memores Majorum loosely means “time honoured principals”. The
members of the lodge are predominately retired police officers so the lodge is aptly named.

What we do

Hammurabi Lodge is a group of Masons who like to meet with like-minded people and enjoy
other’s company. We are conscious of the local community and endeavour to support local
worthy causes when we can.

Why join us?

Originally membership was taken from police officers who were members of The
Northumbria, Durham and Teesside Constabulary’s. Over the years this has been relaxed and
we now take prospective members from the police and associated services, military, and
those who have been recommended by members.

Strategy Seminar | Durham Freemasons

The second Grand Officer/Visiting Support Officer Seminar was held at Penshaw Masonic Hall tonight and was well attended as was last night’s Seminar at Ferryhill Masonic Centre.

The main speakers were the Provincial Grand Master, John Thompson, and Rak Bhalla with Tom Gittins filling in and the subject was the 2022 and beyond National Strategy for Craft and Royal Arch with emphasis on its impact in the Durham Province.

A quirky beermat, introduced by Rak, will soon be seen in your masonic halls with the Members Pathway outlined in its artwork.

The evening concluded with a question-and-answer session and a light supper.  The many points outlined and raised in the Seminar will be put forward to all members as the directive for the province, in the near future.

February at Rowlandson Chapter | Durham Freemasons

Team visits are one of the many enjoyable duties that appointed acting officers enjoy within the Province of Durham, taking each of them to different Chapter Convocations that all have their own unique experiences.  On Thursday 9th February the full Provincial Team was led by the Grand Superintendent, John Thompson, who had the pleasure to visit the members of Rowlandson Chapter, who meet at the Masonic Hall in Ferryhill.

The provincial team were welcomed by the members of Rowlandson Chapter who then got on with the business of the evening and performed an exaltation ceremony to the highest standard for their new member Gareth Wilson.  The ceremony was enjoyed by all in attendance and shone a light on the hard work and effort put in by the members of the chapter to make it the perfect experience and welcome for Gareth.

Following the business upstairs everyone enjoyed the festive board and one another’s company over a very delicious meal.

RFH Installed Masters Dinner | Durham Freemasons

Monday September 5th saw 53 Durham Installed Masters attend the Ferryhill Installed Masters Dinner, where John Dodds handed over a donation of £800 to Janet McDonagh representing ‘Ferryhill Churches Together Food

The Town of Ferryhill has long been Synonymous with Freemasonry since the first Lodge, The Rowlandson Lodge was consecrated in Ferryhill on the 28 th of August 1909 some 113 years ago in the newly built Dean Bank School. This lodge then met for the next 18 years in the Town Hall until the current Masonic Hall was bought and dedicated on the 31 st August 1927.

Various other Craft Lodges were then formed within the building, Rodger de Ferry Lodge in 1943, Manor Lodge in 1963, Aycliffe Lodge in 1978 and Hammurabi Lodge which came to Ferryhill from Durham in 2017, there are also 5 other Side degree Lodges that meet in the Hall the oldest dating back to 19 th June 1929.

Over these many years the members of all these Lodges have always supported and assisted wherever possible many various Charities, most of which have been the more predominantly well know ones. However, many local ones along with various single donations to individual causes have always been given by the Freemasons of Ferryhill as well.

The Hall is also used for various other Charitable functions as well as Weddings, Christenings, Funerals, and many other celebratory occasions, i.e., Anniversaries and Birthdays.

In 2000 it was decided by several members from the various Lodges which meet in the building to organise an Installed Masters Dinner which would be held once a year with a guest speaker in attendance. A donation of the evening’s proceeds would then be made to the speakers nominated charity. This was a successful event for several years the last one being held in the Hall on 1 st September 2013 over these years a total of £3,823.00 has been given to these various charities

After the recent Pandemic we have all experienced in 2020/2021, three of the organisers of the original event, John Dodds, George Bull, and John Nye along with other members from the other Lodges agreed that we should once again hold the Dinner.

The main aim of this evening would be to raise as funds for a nominated Charity in Ferryhill to assist those in the local community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

Grand Designs | Durham Freemasons

On Wednesday the 20th July,  the Masonic Hall in Ferryhill hosted a meeting of the Craft and Chapter Grand Lodge Officers called by the Provincial Grand Master, John Thompson and his Team.

The overflowing car park was a first indication of a very large attendance and the hall was soon brimming full with all seats taken.

John opened the meeting with a warm welcome to everyone present and outlined his plans for the future of freemasonry in the Province of Durham, emphasizing his now familiar  “stronger together” message and the role that the present company would play in his plans.

The presentation outlined the responsibilities of Grand Officers in the support of Lodges and Chapters, with talks by Michael Graham the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, Tom Gittins the Provincial Grand Secretary/Scribe E and John Watts, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, covering a range of topics.

All present were very enthusiastic and participated in a question and answer session at the end. The Past Provincial Grand Master Eric Heaviside stood up on behalf of all present to thank John and his Team and wished them every success for the future.

A splendid buffet followed where the general feel good factor was obvious for all to see.
