Who are we?

Vulcan Lodge was the second Masonic lodge to be formed at Blackhill. It was consecrated on 26th November 1938 and continues to this day as a friendly and vibrant lodge. It bears the name of the Roman God of the furnace, the forge, and metal working – depicted on our lodge badge – and emphasises the lodge’s roots in the steelmaking and metal working industries for which the whole of the Consett area became justly and
proudly famous.

Our founders were, obviously, a tenacious and determined group of men, some of whom had businesses in the town, as the first five years of the lodge’s existence were blighted by the outbreak and trauma of the Second World War. Five of our lodge members saw active war service in which Bro. Ronald Green was unfortunately killed in action and Bro. H. 0. Guest and Bro W. Williamson were reported as ‘missing in action’.

In 1961 our lodge forged links with Vulcan Lodge No 4510 in Middlesbrough and the two lodges have exchanged Fraternal Visits every year for the past 60
years. This eventually led to links being formed, by both lodges, with two other Vulcan Lodges, No 3810 in London, and No 4382 in Derbyshire. The first
meeting of all four lodges took place at Blackhill on Thursday 18th September l997, and has since rotated in each lodge every four years.

Freemasonry engenders a strong sense of fellowship and commitment in its members and Vulcan Lodge is a prime example of this as we have several members who have stayed with us for well over 50 years. We have others who maintain their memberships from Denmark, France, New Zealand and several towns throughout the British Isles.

As we approach our 85th anniversary we look forward to a bright and distinguished future.

St Aidan L4080

St Aidans Lodge L4080

Who are we?

Formed in 1920, the Lodge is named after Aidan, the Apostle of Northumbria, because the first Master was vicar of the local church with that name.

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations with roots in the traditions of the stonemasons who built Britain’s cathedrals and
castles. Operative stonemasons wore aprons and gloves to protect themselves while working on shaping rough pieces of stone and travelled to different
locations seeking work and, to distinguish themselves from unqualified builders, they used grips, words and signs. Now, instead of constructing cathedrals and
castles, Freemasons meet to build friendships and communities and use building analogies to teach members how to lead productive lives to benefit the
communities in which they live.

What we do

The ceremonies we work are unique to this lodge. We follow the Emulation Lodge of Improvement (dating back to 1823) but with nuances based on Northumberland Past Masters’ working, introduced by our founding Master, The Revd Canon Jenkin Jones, who came to Blackhill from Tyneside.

Why join us?

The current and past occupations of St Aidan’s 34 members (which include six Honorary members) are varied and include charity directors, police officers, a
National Crime Agency officer, a lawyer, an international freight export manager, a galvanizing plant manager, an auto technician specialist and a
finance director for a theological college. Several members are former servicemen, who enjoy the traditional and formal aspects of the meetings and
the social aspects of dining afterwards. Of our members, 14 are Master Masons (light blue).

Outside of family life and work, members’ other interests include Scouting, Northumbria Blood bikes, motorcycling (Widows Sons-Durham Chapter) and
church ministers and leaders.

The lodge has significantly reinvented itself in the last decade. Presently we are geared up for two candidates each year, plus an installation. We focus on well- delivered ceremonies, followed by a high-quality dining experience.

The annual meeting to install the Master is in May each year. We usually meet to rehearse on the Wednesday in the week before each meeting.

Organ transplant  | Durham Freemasons

How many masons does it take to move an organ?

Five at most – a van man, two to carry the organ and an extra two to lift into the van.

On Sunday 12 February there were seven volunteers to move the organ from Burnopfield Masonic Hall, now successfully installed in St Aidan Freemasons Hall Blackhill.

Paul Heatherington  of St Aidan Lodge there to assist……. kindly recorded the mammoth move, stated: “I was there to assist and I did, I carried the glass for the organ music!”

A big shout out to the volunteers whose efforts we are sure will be greatly appreciated by all at Blackhill, John Johnson Coronation Lodge, Peter Hough Vulcan Lodge, Trevor Simmons Benfeldsyde Lodge, David McGeorge Vulcan Lodge, Jeff Hird Derwent Lodge, and  Keith Walker St Aidan Lodge.

Well Done St Aidan | Durham Freemasons

On Tuesday 11 October 2022 RW Bro John Paul Thompson, Provincial Grand Master travelled to St Aidan Freemasons Hall Laburnum Avenue Blackhill, and he brought with him a deputation of officers, including three of his assistants. Joining him was RW Bro N E Heaviside, PProvGM – initiated sixty years ago in Benfeldsyde Lodge No 7807, which also meets in St Aidan Freemasons Hall. They were all there to celebrate the Centenary of St Aidan Lodge No 4080.  The lodge reached the milestone of 100 years on Friday 8 May 2020, but that was in the early days of the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown. That Friday did not pass by unnoticed. The lodge marked that 2020 day with a Centenary booklet – which included a copy of the Consecration summons – distributed to all members, the widows of former members and others. And during the lockdown, the lodge held virtual ZOOM meetings and published two other booklets “One in a 100 – a record of St Aidan Lodge in the 2020-21 pandemic” and one with a message from every member, but it was only on Tuesday 11 October 2022 that the lodge was able to join together and celebrate its 100 years. And it is celebrated in some style.

Fifty years ago, W Bro J MacMurray, Deputy Provincial Grand Master-in- Charge led the Provincial Deputation to celebrate fifty years of working! Present on 11   October 2022 were members Stan Fitches, Eric Heatherington, Paul Heatherington and former members Malcolm Oliver (PM Old Dunelmian Lodge No 8100)  and Gareth Davies  (John Watts’ first cousin)  who were all initiated in St Aidan Lodge more than fifty years ago!

Readers may realise that, whilst John arrived at Blackhill with three of his assistants, all four were present at the meeting. The other assistant was already there to greet him. W Bro John David Watts, PSGD, Assistant Provincial Grand Master, is Worshipful Master of St Aidan Lodge. John Watts was installed as Master of St Aidan Lodge in May 2022, by Paul Heatherington. John was initiated into St Aidan Lodge on 12 June 1984, also by Paul Heatherington ( then St Aidan’s ADC).  Paul was   a last-minute stand-in, as the WM was absent. Looking up, once material light was restored, John recognised Paul, as the solicitor he had seen at Crook Police Station, on 16 April 1984, representing fifteen miners arrested at Tow Law in the early days of the 1984-5 Miners’ Strike, an event which was followed by one hundred miners laying siege to Crook Police station!

At the meeting, Paul Heatherington gave a brief history of the Lodge, “To read click here”   after which Mike Davis, Asst Prov Secretary read the Centenary Warrant, which the PGM presented to the lodge, with the members receiving Centenary Jewels. At the end of the meeting, the Worshipful Master, John Watts, presented the PGM with a cheque for £4080 as a donation to the next Festival.

After the meeting, all enjoyed a splendid four-course banquet and everyone received a pen, a replica of the Centenary Jewel on a slate coaster and a booklet “St Aidan Lodge No 4080: One hundred years …plus ” which includes a foreword by the Provincial Grand Master.

A fantastic night was enjoyed by everyone present.
