A night of Firsts | Durham Freemasons

Eardulph Lodge hit some new milestones on Friday 10 th February when they initiated 3 candidates and saw one of their members receive a 70-year certificate.  The Provincial Grand Master granted special dispensation to allow the Lodge to perform two ceremonies in one night.

The Lodge was opened at an earlier time by the Master, Ian Heaviside, with a top team of past masters to initiate Cameron Henderson.  Cameron should have been balloted a year ago, however a severe stroke delayed his plans until he had sufficiently recovered.  The team of past masters ensured that the ceremony was focused on Bro Henderson to make it the best experience possible.  He was directed around the Lodge by the Junior Deacon David Battensby, with his dad, Alex Henderson the Senior Deacon.

The Lodge was then called off until the usual start time when the regular officers took their positions.  The Lodge then performed a double initiation ceremony for Tom Keith and Lee Sample.  The Charge was then delivered to all three candidates collectively.  Both ceremonies were excellent and were a great foundation for the Initiate’s Masonic careers.

The celebrations continued when John Thompson, the Provincial Grand Master invited Danny Pollock to the floor to acknowledge his 70 years of membership.  John discussed those years with Danny and many memories were recalled.

Danny was Initiated in Scotland in 1953 but moved to the North East to manage the Caterpillar factory in Birtley.  He soon joined Eardulph Lodge in 1953 shortly after HM Queen Elizabeth II had taken the throne and has been a member ever since.  A regular attender of both the Lodge and the Eardulph Whiskey Club.

Danny enthused about the ‘Eardulph family’ and how much he has enjoyed his Freemasonry.  John thanked Danny for his 70 years of service and commitment to Freemasonry not just to Eardulph Lodge, but to our Province and Freemasonry in general.

John then presented Danny with his certificate however he wasn’t finished Danny was given a surprise field promotion to Past Provincial Grand Sword Bearer, much to his delight and that of the packed Lodge room.

At the festive Board the ProvGM thanked Eardulph for another wonderful masonic night in Chester Le Street, he acknowledged the excellent ceremony to initiate three candidates and to still make the night special for Danny. He congratulated them all for thinking out of the box, for thinking differently. He congratulated them on their membership drive which will see 6 candidates along with three joining members in the coming months.

Later a toast was made to Danny by Alan Jenkins, a past candidate of Danny’s and long-standing friend.  Alan recounted many funny moments including the Eardulph Lodge Whiskey Club trip to Edradour distillery and foreign escapades.  Danny being a true Scotsman likes a wee dram.  It was only fitting that he was presented with his favourite tipple, a special edition malt from Edradour distillery.

Washington delight. | Durham Freemasons

Washington Lodge celebrated their Centenary in style on Wednesday 26th October 2022, with over 80 brethren in attendance, including a full deputation led by the Provincial Grand Master, John Thompson.

Visitors arriving by car at the Birtley Masonic Hall, the venue for this special event, were welcomed by the Master of the Lodge, Kevin Bainbridge, dressed in his dayglo jacket acting as one of the car park attendants.

After the Lodge was opened and the deputation had been formally admitted, Kevin proceeded with the business of the evening which included William Surtees, a Past Master of the Lodge, reading out the Lodge history, which can be viewed in full using the link below. The Provincial Grand Master, John, then presented Kevin with the Lodge Centenary Warrant after it had been read out by Mike Davis.

Lodge History

The Provincial Chaplain, Julian Ward then dedicated a full set of Lodge regalia after which the PGM collared the Master in his chair. Kevin then took to the floor and collared his officers with their new collars.

After the Lodge was closed and suitable photos taken everyone retired to take their place at the festive board. The packed dining room enjoyed an excellent meal, brilliantly served by the staff.

In his reply to the toast to himself, John thanked the Lodge wholeheartedly for the generous cheque of £2089.00 presented to him by the Master before the Lodge was closed and he in turn presented the Lodge with their platinum festival award.

A big thank you to all at Washington Lodge for being the perfect hosts.

Well Done Ken | Durham Freemasons

On Monday the 10th. October 2022, Ken Huntingdon of St. George’s Lodge celebrated 50 unbroken years in freemasonry within the Province of Durham.

Due to ill health Ken cannot now attend his lodge. In the circumstances the Assistant Provincial Grand Master, John Watts very kindly took time out of his busy schedule to visit Ken at his home in Cramlington and present him with his 50 year certificate. Ken’s wife Dorothy kindly provided tea and biscuits for this special occasion.

In 1972 Ken was a serving officer in the RAF in Germany. His father-in-law was the Worshipful Master of Bewick Lodge and naturally wished to initiate his son in law during his year as Master. Ken decided to drive home for his initiation in September 1972 after which he drove straight back to Germany. He was clearly very keen to join the craft and particularly Bewick Lodge. Ken was installed as Worshipful Master of Bewick Lodge in 1984, being promoted to PAGDC in 1994. Ken made many friends within freemasonry, particularly in the Province of Durham.

Ken’s work took him to Yorkshire where he lived in Osset for many years. He did not lose his love of freemasonry and visited a number of lodges in the area. He moved back to the North East when his health was becoming more of an issue and joined St. George’s Lodge on the 11th. June 2007. Ken was an active member and enjoyed participating in the ceremonies with his son in law, now a member. When the lodge relocated to Birtley from Washington Ken found access to the Lodge more difficult and because of circumstances accepted becoming an Honorary Member. He continues to take an interest in all lodge business.

Ken thanked John for visiting him at home and presenting him with his 50 year certificate. The visit was included in the St. George’s Lodge minute book at their meeting on the 10th. October 2022.

We all wish Ken good health for the future.
