Durham Freemasons Help Charity Out Of A Pickle

JulyThe Pickle Palace Social Enterprise Group delighted with Durham Freemasons COVID-19 Relief Support Grant of £8,714;
Based in Greenside, Gateshead takes food that supermarkets ‘waste’ because of the best before date and re-distribute it with the aim of reducing the food poverty gap in our area, to provide healthy and accessible food (and advice) and to reduce the level of food going to landfill.
Since the onset of the Covid-19 crisis, they stopped all normal activities and are re-directed the food to those in need in our area, whilst also making chutneys, pickles and jams. delivering some 150 parcels per week and over 24 tonnes of food since the 23rd of March when the Covid-19 lockdown began.
Pickle Palace volunteers also make a visit a weekly visit to the Chopwell Community Centre with there produce where food can be collected at the a ‘Pay As You Please Market’.
In order to ensure that they are in a position to provide future support and respond to the needs of the local community the members of Derwent Lodge consider assisted with their application, and have now reaped the fruits of their labours with this significant funding.
