Provincial visit to Vale of Tees

On Wednesday the 21st of June the Provincial Grand Master, John Thompson, had the pleasure of leading the Provincial team to visit the Vale of Tees Lodge and meet at the masonic hall in Middleton-in-Teesdale.  It was a very warm evening but that didn’t spoil the fun for the Durham masons in attendance, who donned their regalia to gather into the lodge and enjoy themselves.  The Provincial team were welcomed into the lodge by all the members and in particular by well-known Teesdale freemason George Addison, who was covering the office of Worshipful Master for the meeting.  The brethren enjoyed a talk about freemasonry in Teesdale which was written by Alan Farrar and delivered by John Bayles in Alan’s absence.  Appreciation was shown in the manner usual among masons.

The team visit was the final one for the Masonic year prior to the Provincial meeting and a well-earned summer break.

Parking: 

There is ample parking within a short walk from the Temple.

Approach: 

Wearside Masonic Temple is easy to access from the city centre and all major roads leading into it.

Entrance: 

Wide doors, a level entrance once beyond the entrance stairway, and easy access to the lift to all floors.

Emergency: 

Emergency exits from the upper floors have steps.

Accessibility:

The Wearside Masonic Temple was constructed in 1932 and not ideally suited to those with mobility issues. That said, once the small stairway at the entrance is overcome, with the assistance of our brethren, the building has a lift to all floors and internal doorways will accommodate wheelchair access to the overwhelming majority of areas.

Toilets: 

Accessible toilets

Inside: 

No internal ramps, wide doorways, rest chairs, a hearing loop is available and all dining tables are wheelchair accessible.

Stairs/Lifts: 

A small number of stairs with handrails to the entrance leading to a lift to all floors.

Parking: 

Street parking only on Bridge Street but the pavements are wide, and cars are generally off the main road when parked. There is some additional parking outside the Tow Law Millennium Primary school on the adjacent Wear Street just around the corner.

Approach: 

The Masonic Hall is on the Bridge Street section of the A68 passing through Tow Law.  From the south, drive past the Tow Law Service Station on your right and Tow Law Masonic Hall is 500 yards further along the road on your left. From the north, driving along the High Street section of the A68, the road takes a 90-degree left turn immediately adjacent the large war memorial. The Masonic Hall is 100 yards along the road on your right. There are a bus services passing close to the lodge, but Tow Law is a rural town and buses are getting scarcer all the time so please do check up-to-date timetables.

Entrance: 

One enters the building through a large lobby. On the right is a well-appointed and comfortable Dining Hall. To your left is the Bar and Kitchen. Further through the lobby are the stairs to the first floor and the Chapter room.

Emergency: 

The building is well appointed with emergency lights to aid safer egress. A smoke detection system is installed to vulnerable areas to detect and alarm in the event smoke is detected. There are steel fire escape steps from the first floor to the back yard should it be required for safe egress.

Fire Extinguishers are sited at designated points throughout the building.

A defibrillator system is installed to the outside of the Masonic Hall for use by both Companions and the Local Community.

Accessibility:

Good easy access with a single step and wide access door into the long wide hallway inside the building. We also have an access ramp in the hallway should it be required. There is no specific wheelchair access to or around the building, however, we have had many wheelchair user Companions attend both the Chapter and the Festive Board.

Toilets: 

Gentlemen’s toilets are located to the ground floor and Ladies on the first floor. On Chapter evenings, the toilets on the first floor are available for use by the Companions.  There are no specialist disabled toilets at the present time, however the provision of such disabled facilities are being actively investigated.

Inside: 

tastefully decorated. The dining hall is bright, well-lit and comfortable.

The heating systems have been recently replaced so even on a cold Tow Law evening you are sure of a warm welcome.  The first floor is accessible by a stair lift accessed from the long wide hallway.

Stairs/Lifts: 

The lodge room is on the first floor. It is well appointed, comfortable and

Stockton Masonic Hall



A historic building located close to the town centre of Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham, England. Completed in 1864, the hall is a significant landmark. The building is characterized by its distinctive Neo-Georgian style, which features elegant columns, ornate detailing, and a grand entrance staircase.

Parking: 

There is a large car park and on street parking plus use of a school car park adjacent to the building.

Approach: 

From the car park there is a large entrance with a roller shutter door. This doubles as an entrance for people with disabilities. Carry on past this and turn left into Wellington Street, there is a front door with two steps up. A door bell is also placed here with intercom communication.

Entrance: 

Blue Door on Wellington street (keep ringing the buzzer – someone will eventually let you in).

Emergency: 

Emergency exits are well sign posted.

Accessibility:

Only obstacle is 3 small steps into the temple. 

Toilets: 

Just inside the roller shutter entrance is a large reception area. This includes Ladies, Gents and Disabled toilets. There is a further Gent’s toilet just off the main reception area near the staircase and lift.

Inside: 

The temple is large well decorated and has a permanent chequered pavement. Some of the furniture dates back to the eighteenth century.

Recent repairs and improvement to the various roofs have made the building warm and welcoming. There are ladies, gents and disabled toilets in the Wellington Suite and a separate gent’s toilet off the main entrance hall.

The bar area and Cooper Room are well decorated and comfortable. The Cooper Room is used for smaller Festive Boards, events and meetings. The main dining hall is a grand room capable of seating over one hundred comfortably. Doors lead directly into the well equipped 5 star rated kitchen.

Stairs/Lifts: 

There is a large grand staircase from the main reception area. A lift is situated just off the main reception area.

Approach: 

The Lodge building is opposite the Stanhope Sports and Social Club, set back from the street. You may notice the square and compass symbols on the roof.

A green door to the left of the bay window. There is a small step. 

Emergency: 

A refuge room on the same floor as the lodge room is available in emergencies. 

Accessibility:

Stanhope Masonic Hall is accessible to members and visitors with limited mobility, having recently installed a stairlift. 

Toilets: 

Available on the ground floor. 

Inside: 

There is a hallway leading to the dining room/bar and the staircase to the Lodge Room.

Stairs/Lifts: 

The building has one flight of stairs, which has a stairlift.

There is no dedicated carpark but there is ample parking on the road outside the hall.

Wide doors which can be kept open to ease access.

Emergency: 

Illuminated emergency exits on all floors. Diagrams of emergency escape routes are posted throughout the building and on the information TV. Smoke detectors are installed at the relevant points throughout the building.

We also have a defibrillator adjacent to the front door which is also accessible to the public.

Accessibility:

There are three steps at the front of the hall and we have a removeable wheelchair ramp to aid access.

Toilets: 

Toilets are wheelchair accessible.

Inside: 

The ground floor is completely level including the dining room and bar. Dining tables are wheelchair accessible. We have a well-stocked reasonably priced bar. The dining hall has a stage at one end for functions. We have a good size kitchen with industrial cooker and dishwasher.

Stairs/Lifts: 

There is a stairlift to the first floor where the temple and robing rooms are located.

There are a number of exits should any emergency arise. The Hall also has a defibrillator should that be required.

The Masonic Hall is easy to access for able and those who are disabled.

There are adequate toilet facilities, male and female, including disabled downstairs. There are also toilet facilities upstairs.

No internal ramps. Hearing loop in temple. Dining tables are wheelchair accessible.

Two stair cases available to temple on first floor. The rear stair case has stair lift, and then ramp into temple.
