Honours for Local Freemasons

In the 2024 New Years Honours List, Allan Stokoe of Yarm Lodge (Stokesley) has been awarded the British Empire Medal.

His award was made for “service to the community in Eldon, Yorks”. Many congratulations to Allan on this fantastic achievement, made in the face of serious health issues. It serves as an inspiration to us all.

Bill Watson, secretary of Saint Cecilia Lodge has been informed that in the New Years Honours list he will be the recipient of the Medal of the Order of the British Empire (BEM). This is for Services to Music, primarily as Director of the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival for 21 years as well as his contribution as director and organiser of music courses and workshops for over 40 years. He has also performed at numerous Provincial Festivals and Carol Services.

The Great North Big Band Jazz Festival, which is now the largest festival of its kind held in one venue, in the U.K. will again, take place in Chester le Street on 1st 2nd 3rd March. The Festival has in previous years received financial assistance from Durham Benevolence as well as Saint Cecilia Lodge. This assistance has enabled the Festival to continue to provide performance opportunities for over 700 musician during the weekend and for numerous young musicians to experience working with some of the leading musicians in the country through workshops. The Festival also appreciates the involvement of the Freemasons of Chester le Steet and the Chester le Street Masonic Centre which has helped to develop the Festival over a number of years.
